Research

As part of our expeditions we are involved in a variety of research projects focused on the environment and the identification of new species. During our recent trip to Bonaire we stumbled upon a manmade well carved out of the coral limestone deposits. It contained a dense natural monoculture of a green microbe. Images from our microscopes reveal a loop of cells of a photosynthetic organism. Using a refractometer we determined the salinity to be 10 parts per thousand indicating a mixture of freshwater and seawater.  The pH of the water was approximately 6.5. Genetic analysis by our molecular biologist Sebastian Cocioba revealed that the organism lacks rubisco and the marker maturase K indicating that this organisms is not a plant but rather a photosynthetic cyanobacteria. More testing is underway.
